생리학과 관련된 1992년의 첫 소식은 '평활근연구회'의 창립이다. 평활근연구회는 대한생리학회와 직접적인 연관이 없으며, 또 의학과 생물학 계통의 다른 분야 인사들도 참여하고 있는 학술모임이지만 대한생리학회 소속의 생리학자들이 주축이 되는 점도 틀림없는 사실이다.
1970년대 말부터 부산의대, 서울의대, 연세의대, 중앙의대, 한양의대 등 몇몇 생리학교실에서는 위장관 및 혈관 평활근에 관한 수축과 전기생리학적 연구를 수행했으며, 그들 연구자는 생리학 학술대회 등을 통해 수시로 정보와 의견 교환을 하여 왔던바, 이제 조금 더 공식적인 모임을 갖는 것이 연구에 도움이 될 것에 의견을 모으게 되었다. 그리하여 1992년 초부터 강복순(연세의대), 김기순(한양의대), 이상호(부산의대), 김기환(서울의대) 교수 등 생리학자들과 의견을 같이하는 기초 및 임상 교수들이 몇 차례의 준비모임과 학술발표회를 통해 모임의 성격을 뚜렷이 하여 마침내 6월 5일 충남의대에서 학술대회를 겸해 창립총회를 개최함으로써 공식적인 출범을 하게 되었다.
그러한 모습은 평활근생리학에만 그치지 않는 것이 주로 심장생리학을 전공하는 학자들을 주축으로 하여 비슷한 과정을 거쳐 1994년 6월 4일에 공식적으로 출범한 '이온통로연구회'에서도 찾아 볼 수 있으며, 아직 공식화하지는 않았지만 신경생리학 등 여러 분야에서 그러한 움직임을 보이는 것이다. 그리고 기왕에 존재하는 타 분과학회나 세부전문 학회 또는 연구회 등에서 활발한 활동을 하는 것도 비슷한 현상으로 여겨진다. 그것은 현대학문 발전 과정에서 으레 나타나는 현상으로 이른바 학문의 선진국에서는 오래전부터 나타난 현상인 것이다. 우리가 오늘날 1940 50년대의 의학협회 종합학술대회를 오늘의 눈으로는 의아하게 보는 것과 마찬가지로 미래에는 오늘날의 대한생리학회 (종합)학술대회를 이해하기 어려운 현상으로 볼지도 모른다. 그러나 적어도 아직까지는 대한생리학회와 그 학술대회가 우리나라 생리학 발전의 중추 기구이자 발진 기지로서의 역할이 끝나지 않은 것으로 생각된다. 그것이 학회 창립 50주년을 눈앞에 둔 우리들의 일반적 소회일 것이다.
탄생의 소식은 또 있었다. 울산의대에 생리학교실이 개설된 것이다. 물론 이보다 3년 전에 교실의 모체인 아산생명과학연구소에 관련 연구실이 생겼었기 때문에 새삼스러운 일은 아니었지만, 어쨌든 31번째의 의과대학 생리학교실이 탄생한 것이다.
그리고 대한생리학회는 동아제약 등의 협찬을 받아 'International Symposium on Cardiac Ion Channels and Effects of Taurine on Heart' 제목의 대규모 국제학술대회를 가졌다. 5월 19일(화) 서울 신라호텔에서 열린 이 학술대회에서는 서울의대 엄융의 교수 등의 'Effect of taurine on the activation of background current in cardiac myocytes'를 비롯하여 7편의 논문이 발표되었으며, 각 논문에 대해 열띤 토론이 이어졌다.
이러한 발전과 성장의 소식 가운데 제44차 대한생리학회 총회 및 학술대회가 10월 15일과 16일 이틀에 걸쳐 서울치대 구강생리학교실 주관으로 서울 롯데 호텔에서 개최되었다. 총회에서는 김정진 교수(가톨릭의대)가 회장으로 취임하였으며, 이상호 교수(부산의대)가 차기회장에 선임되었다. 그리고 고일섭(경희의대), 채의업(계명의대), 길원식(전남의대) 교수 등 학회장을 역임한 원로 세 분이 고문으로 추대되었으며 김형찬(경희치대), 박춘식(울산의대), 이승일(연세치대), 천재식(단국치대), 하종식(이화의대) 교수 등 5명이 새로 이사로 선임되었다. 서울치대를 비롯하여 여러 치과대학의 생리학교실(원)들은 오래 전부터 학회 활동에 활발히 참여하고 있었지만, 1992년에는 서울치대가 학술대회를 주관하고 세 명의 치과대학 주임교수들이 학회 이사로 참여함으로써 학회 발전에 큰 힘이 되었다. 실무이사로는 김명석 총무이사만 새로 임명되었을 뿐, 나머지 4명은 그대로 유임되어 학회 운영에 연속성이 유지되었다.
학술대회와 관련하여 가장 뚜렷한 변화는 기간이 이틀로 늘어난 점이었다. 이미 하루에 모든 학술 발표를 수용할 수 없을 정도로 학회의 학술 활동은 활발해진 것이다. 그리고 특별강연도 조금 더 발전한 모습인 심포지움 형태로 바뀌어 포항공대의 이진옥 교수와 미국 버지니어 대학의 김용일 교수가 발표를 맡았고 그에 이어 활발한 토론을 벌였다. 그리고 종래의 특별강연 프로그램도 있어서, 한 해 전인 1991년에 노벨생리 의학상을 받은 Erwin Neher(독일 Max Planck Institut) 교수가 'Ion Channels for Communication Between and Within Cells'라는 제목의 강연을 하였다. Neher 선생은 노벨상 수상 경력으로도 학회 회원들의 관심을 끌었지만, 그보다도 1986·7년 무렵부터 우리나라 생리학계에서도 patch clamp technique를 사용하는 연구를 활발히 벌여왔던 것이 그 강연이 더욱 주목받은 연유라고 생각된다. 일반 논문으로는 구두 45편과 포스터 16편 등 61편의 논문이 발표되었다. 그리고 몇 해 전부터 나타나기 시작하던 현상이지만, 이 해에 들어 특히 여러 대학끼리의 공동연구나 타 전공분야와의 협동연구가 부쩍 늘어나는 모습을 볼 수 있었다.
